ClimaCrew is working towards scaling seaweed production through the use of data, technology and social sciences.
Our mission is to make India a significant player in the global seaweed space. Through our advanced technology platform, we bring together suppliers and buyers of diverse seaweed products, catering to the worldwide demand for seaweed. Our efforts in the seaweed sector are focused on creating livelihood opportunities and enhancing marine resilience.
Our Story
1. The Challenge: Declining Fisheries & Climate Pressures
Fish catches in India’s coastal waters have dropped due to warming oceans, acidification, and extreme weather, threatening small-scale fishers and food security.
2. Why Seaweed
Seaweed has emerged as a resilient alternative. It sequesters CO₂ up to 20x more efficiently than forests per unit area, offers local income for fishers, and protects coastlines without depleting marine resources.
3. 2022: Founding & Early Exploration
Since 2022, ClimaCrew has been designing mitigation and adaptation strategies by combining data science, marine engineering, and seaweed cultivation to rebuild a sustainable marine economy.
4. Platform Potential:
Now & Forward
Our platform connects farmers, processors, and buyers, tracks cultivation, enables marketplace access, and measures carbon using satellite data and key marine parameters.
5. Future Extensions
We are building a marine marketplace and a data-sharing app to strengthen digital literacy among fisherfolk and marine value-chain partners while digitising the marine value chain for global collaboration.
6. Triple Bottom Line Impact
By focusing on livelihoods, climate resilience, and sustainable production, ClimaCrew is building a holistic ecosystem that supports coastal Self-Help Groups (SHGs), reduces dependence on declining fish catches, and creates new, climate-smart income streams.
